Raised amid the prairie potholes of eastern South Dakota, Doug Brown was never far from a lake, slough or grassy meadow and the animals and birds to be found there. He spent hours studying birds, recognizing them by a flash of color, a patch of white, length of tail or bill...The same can be said of his knowledge of the deer, elk and antelope of South Dakota and Wyoming. He spent 35 years in Wyoming, 15 years as a ranch hand and 20 working for the Wyoming DOT. But no matter what he was doing, he was never far from the wild places and always made the time and effort to connect physically and emotionally with the wilderness and its inhabitants.
That knowledge and love of nature is very much in evidence in Doug's philosophy and his art. He is a realist, striving to bring authenticity to each piece, and depicting that which he has witnessed and even lived as a cowboy, a hunter, and a father. "There are so many things in my head, stories to be told, I have ideas for so many different pieces!" His excitement is palpable, contagious and inspirational. And since his retirement and relocation to Arizona, he can now concentrate on telling those stories and creating those works of art. His studio is on 5 acres of land within a stone's throw of the Prescott National Forest. He and his wife, JoAnn, enjoy being so close to millions of acres of wild lands, taking their dogs out for quail or just hiking and reveling in the awesome vistas for which Arizona is known.
